Workshop in Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), 2 Aurangzeb Road, New-Delhi at 4pm
This panel brings together scholars working at the Centre de Sciences Humaines in the field of urban studies to present their recent work on Delhi and the National Capital Region. Researchers will present their current research projects with a focus on the conceptual frameworks and methodologies they have utilized to open up their particular urban or regional object, or trajectory of analysis. Through this, the panel hopes both to explore specific sites within Delhi and the NCR, while asking what are effective ways to grasp the complexity of the contemporary Indian megacity and megaurban region?
Papers will include discussions on how to study the city at the scale of the metropolis (Diya Mehra) and within a regional framework (Marie- Hélène Zérah). The panelists will also consider issues of governance within the contexts of new mega infrastructure projects (Bérénice Bon), in terms of everyday governance in 'illegal' city environments (Anna Zimmer), and from the perspective of communities being displaced by urban transformation (Zarin Ahmad).
Discussants: The panelists include:
Marie- Hélène Zérah (Urban Studies): Coordinator, Suburbin: Subaltern Urbanization in India, looking at the impact of rapid economic growth of small towns within Delhi's metropolitan ambit.
Diya Mehra (Anthropology): Postdoctoral Fellow, examining a macro perspective on how Delhi has transformed since 1991.
Bérénice Bon (Geography): Visiting PhD scholar, looking at how the Delhi metro megaproject is implemented at the scale of the city, and negotiated as it enters local areas.
Anna Zimmer (Geography): Postdoctoral Fellow, examining how sewerage systems are governed in Delhi's poor, informal settlements.
