The first of a number of workshops planned over the next few years, which will engage in close and slow readings of Montaigne.
10.45-11am: arrival and coffee 11-12am: Discussion led by Colin Burrow, John O’Brien, Richard Scholar and Kirsti Sellevold: A brief conspectus of English translations/versions/reworkings of the Essais -- principally Florio, Bacon and Cornwallis, already perhaps focussing on the question of friendship. Copies of the relevant texts are available for download from the MFO website. 12-1pm: A further look at questions arising out of the initial discussion, and further questions anyone present might want to raise, filtered through a collective reading of 'de l'amitié'. 1-2pm: Sandwich lunch – courtesy of the MFO/St Edmund Hall 2-3.30pm: Discussion led by Ian Maclean and Neil Kenny A look at connections between this and other Essais in the volume: ie, is Book I a collection of disparate pieces, or is there any kind of (even temporary or occasional; and/or reader-friendly) 'fil conducteur'?
