The Brahmayāmalatantra (aka Picumata) is probably one of the earliest surviving Śaiva tantras, and possibly the earliest one known to us of the Bhairavatantra tradition. The present volume contains a critical edition and annotated translation of three of its chapters: one on the central maṇḍala of the cult, one on preliminary religious observances (vrata) prescribed for all practitioners (sādhaka), and one on instructions for each individual category of sādhaka — instructions on transgressive sexual rituals for the Tālaka, on strict rules of conduct for the chaste Carubhojin, and on a combination of these for the Mixed Practitioner. This unique system of sādhakas marks an early phase in the development of classification of practitioners seeking liberation and magical powers, and gives us an insight into the tantric world of extremes: of rule-bound sexual encounters involving several female partners and highly impure substances on the one hand, and of asceticism, strict vegetarianism and chastity on the other.

The introduction deals with the main topics raised by the selected chapters, as well as with problems of the sometimes extremely non-standard (Aiśa) Sanskrit that the oldest manuscript transmits. One of the appendices provides a summary of the first twenty-five chapters (about one quarter of the Brahmayāmala) to facilitate further study. The extensive index includes all important keywords and all major Aiśa phenomena.

About the author

After studies in Budapest, Csaba Kiss obtained his doctorate from Oxford University for his edition of selected chapters of the Matsyendrasaṃhitā, a thirteenth-century Śaiva tantric text on yoga. He joined the Early Tantra Project in 2008 to produce this volume, and is currently research assistant at ELTE University, Budapest, working on texts of the tantric Kubjikā tradition and of the jātiviveka genre.

Le Brahmayāmalatantra (connu aussi sous le nom de Picumata) est probablement le plus ancien des tantra shivaïtes qui nous soient parvenus et, semble-t-il, le plus ancien texte connu de la tradition du Bhairavatantra. Le présent volume contient l’édition critique et la traduction annotée de trois chapitres de l’ouvrage, à savoir ceux consacrés au maṇḍalaprincipal du culte, aux observances religieuses préliminaires (vrata) qui s’imposent à tous les adeptes (sādhaka) et aux instructions spécifiques à certaines catégories desādhaka, c’est-à-dire les recommandations concernant les rites sexuels transgressifs pour le tālaka, les règles de conduite strictes pour le carubhojin abstinent et la combinaison des deux pour la catégorie dite « mixte ». Cette classification unique de sādhaka dénote une phase ancienne dans l’évolution de la hiérarchie d’adeptes en quête de délivrance et de pouvoirs surhumains. Elle nous donne à voir un monde tantrique des extrêmes : d’un côté, des pratiques sexuelles codifiées impliquant de multiples partenaires féminins ainsi que des substances impures; de l’autre, des exercices ascétiques, un végétarisme strict et la chasteté.

L’introduction présente les sujets fondamentaux évoqués dans les trois chapitres sélectionnés et discute les problèmes du sanskrit extrêmement irrégulier (aiśa) du manuscrit le plus ancien. Un des appendices fournit le résumé des vingt-cinq premiers chapitres (sur une centaine) du Brahmayāmala pour en faciliter l’étude. Un riche index recense notamment tous les mots-clés et tous les principaux exemples de sanskrit irrégulier (aiśa).

À propos de l'auteur

Après ses études à Budapest, Csaba Kiss a obtenu un doctorat de l’Université d’Oxford pour son édition d’un choix de chapitres de la Matsyendrasaṃhitā, un ouvrage du XIIIesiècle sur le yoga tantrique shivaïte. Il a rejoint le projet franco-allemand « Early Tantra » en 2008 pour préparer le présent volume. Il est actuellement assistant de recherche à l’Université Eötvös Loránd à Budapest, où il étudie la tradition tantrique de la déesse Kubjikā et le genre textuel du jātiviveka.
