The Bhāṭṭatantrarahasya of Khaṇḍadeva (17th c.) belongs to the Bhāṭṭa school of Mīmāṃsā. It deals mainly with the meaning of roots and suffixes, and their role in conveying the meaning of the sentence. Though this is a topic of grammar, it is widely discussed in Nyāya and Mīmāṃsā works as well. The Bhāṭṭatantrarahasya is divided into two parts. The first part begins with the definition of dharma, the main concept of Mīmāṃsā, and then deals at length with the meaning of injunctional suffix (liṅ), refuting the views of logicians and establishing bhāvanā (creative energy) as the main meaning of the sentence. In the second part, the author discusses the meaning of nominal suffixes (sup), quoting relevant rules from Pāṇinian grammar. Though Khaṇḍadeva's interpretation of Pāṇinian rules deviates from the grammatical tradition in some cases, he tries to prove that there is no violation of grammar by the Mīmāṃsakas.

Given the complexity of the Bhāṭṭatantrarahasya, Prof. Ramanuja Tatacharya presents it here with his own commentary, the Sāraprakāśikā. Also included are an index of the Pāṇinian rules, an index of the kārikās (citations) and a bibliography.

About the author

Professor N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya is one of the senior authorities in the fields of Nyāya, Vyākaraṇa, Pūrvamīmāṃsā and Uttaramīmāṃsā. Since retiring as Vice-Chancellor of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha of Tirupati, he has been associated with the French Institute of Pondicherry as Honorary Professor. His profound scholarship has earned him many awards, including the Certificate of Honour for Proficiency in Sanskrit conferred by the President of India and the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur awarded by the French government. He has been awarded the titles of Tarkavācaspati and Śāstraratnākara by the Head of the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha and the Sri Vedanta Desika Sampradaya Sabha, respectively. He is also the recipient of the Ramakrishna Dalmia Srivani Alankara Award of the Ramakrishna Dalmia Srivani Nyas, and the Vachaspati Puraskar Award of the K. K. Birla Foundation.

Le Bhāṭṭatantrarahasya de Khaṇḍadeva (XVIIe s.) appartient à l'école Bhāṭṭa de la Mīmāmsā. Il porte principalement sur la signification des racines et des suffixes et leur rôle dans la transmission du sens de la phrase. Bien que ce sujet relève de la grammaire, il est abondamment discuté dans les oeuvres de Nyāya et de Mīmāmsā également. LeBhāṭṭatantrarahasya est divisé en deux parties: La première partie commence par définir le dharma, le concept principal de la Mīmāmsā, puis étudie en détail le sens du suffixe d'optatif liṅ, qui exprime notamment l'injonction, réfutant le point de vue des logiciens et établissant la bhāvanā (l'efficience) comme la signification principale de la phrase. Dans la deuxième partie, l'auteur discute de la signification des suffixes nominaux (sup) tout en citant les règles pertinentes de la grammaire de Pāṇini. Bien que l'interprétation donnée par Khanḍadeva des règles de Pāṇini s'écarte, dans certains cas, de la tradition grammaticale, l'auteur tente de démontrer que les Mīmāmsakā ne désobéissent en aucun cas aux règles grammaticales.

Le professeur N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya est un éminent savant dans les domaines du Nyāya, du Vyākaraṇa, de la Pūrvamīmāṃsā et de l’Uttaramīmāṃsā. Depuis sa retraite comme Vice-Chancelier du Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha de Tirupati, il est associé à l'Institut Français de Pondichéry en tant que professeur honoraire.
