About the book

The Karmapañjikā is a manual for the domestic rituals of the Paippalāda tradition. Claiming to follow a Sūtra of Paiṭhīnasi, the text was composed by an otherwise unknown Śrīdhara in Orissa in the 16th century CE. His work is a precious late-medieval witness to the Atharvavedic tradition, preserving archaic features dating from the Vedic period, but also showing much influence from various non-Vedic traditions that have been prevalent in this part of eastern India. The critical edition, which will be complete in three volumes, is based on six palm-leaf manuscripts written in Oriya script. This first volume contains an extensive introduction followed by the first nine chapters of text that describe the general paradigms of domestic ritual in this tradition.

About the author

Arlo Griffiths received his PhD in Sanskrit from Leiden University in 2004. After holding a position as lecturer in Indian Religions at the University of Groningen (2004–05), and holding the chair of Sanskrit at Leiden University (2005–08), he joined the EFEO in 2008 as Professor of Southeast Asian History. He was posted at the EFEO’s Jakarta Centre from 2009 through 2014, and now teaches in Paris and Lyons.

Shilpa Sumant received her PhD in Sanskrit from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (Pune) in 2007. Since 2009, she is Sub-editor in the Sanskrit Dictionary Project of the Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune. Since 2014, she is a member of the Regulating Council of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and is one of the editors of its Annals.

La Karmapañjikā est un manuel prescrivant les rites domestiques dans la tradition Paippalāda de l’Atharvaveda. Le texte, qui revendique son adhésion à un Sūtra de Paiṭhīnasi, fut composé en Orissa au XVIe siècle de notre ère par un certain Śrīdhara, dont on ne sait rien par ailleurs. Son ouvrage, témoin précieux de la tradition atharvavédique dans la période médiévale tardive, conserve des traits archaïques remontant à l’époque védique tout en témoignant d’une forte influence de diverses traditions non védiques présentes dans cette région de l’Inde orientale. L’édition critique, qui comptera en totalité trois tomes, s’appuie sur six manuscrits sur ôles en écriture oriya. Ce premier volume contient une introduction détaillée, suivie par l’édition des neuf premiers chapitres du texte, qui décrivent les paradigmes généraux du rituel domestique dans cette tradition.

À propos de l'auteur

Formé à la philologie sanskrite à l’université de Leyde (Pays-Bas), où il soutient sa thèse de doctorat en 2004, Arlo Griffiths a d’abord été maître de conférences en religions indiennes à l'université de Groningue (2004-2005), avant d’occuper la chaire de sanskrit à l’université de Leyde de 2005 à 2008. Il est alors recruté par l’EFEO comme directeur d’études spécialiste de l’histoire de l’Asie du Sud-Est. Il a été en poste au centre EFEO de Jakarta de 2009 à 2014, et assure actuellement un enseignement en France, à Paris et à Lyon.

Shilpa Sumant a soutenu en 2007 sa thèse de doctorat en sanskrit au Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth de Pune. Depuis 2009, elle est coéditrice au sein du Sanskrit Dictionary Project du Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, également de Pune. En 2014, elle a rejoint le conseil d’administration du Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI), et compte actuellement parmi les rédacteurs de sa revue, les Annals of the BORI.
