The book comprises selected diary entries allegedly penned by Li Peng between April 15 and June 24, 1989.
According to the South China Morning Post, the manuscript was reportedly ready for publication in early 2004 but the move was blocked by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. Widely seen as the mastermind behind the military crackdown and held responsible for the June 4 Massacre, Li Peng was eager to get his side of the story told.
Li Peng was the fourth Premier of the People's Republic of China between 1987 and 1998.
"The book provides amazing details of how decisions were made, how the order was carried out and how the leaders reached internal consensus," said Bao Pu.
