This presentation will give some results obtained through a study of Tamil towns during the first century of the colonial dominance. The region had a well developed urban frame, with a great diversity of urban plans and landscapes. The urban people showed a great capacity to adapt their practices to a new regional environment, even if the fluidity which was a characteristic of urban society was reduced by the colonial intervention.
