This lecture by Prof. Engin Isin provides an overview of global struggles over citizenship understood both as legal status (with rights and responsibilities) and political practice. In Europe, Asia, Americas and Africa as the relationship between citizens and states is being reconfigured, political practice of citizenship is becoming more complicated with human rights discourse. The question I want to address is what lessons, if any, a local struggle over citizenship can draw from a knowledge of these global struggles.
