For many decades, middle- and long-distance top-level running competitions have been dominated by East-African athletes, especially by Ethiopians and Kenyans. Various explanations have been provided to explain the reasons of such a sporting superiority. They serve as the background for this current research project, whose final purpose is to suggest an alternative way of explanation, based on a social sciences approach. Empirical data are collected through questionnaires for the determination of sociological profiles of athletes at each step of the career; through interviews with droppers in order to document the non-sport related competences necessary to the fulfilment of the career, and through documentation collection and interviews with key informants for the description of the multiple dimensions of the world of professional East-African athletics.
