Negotiating after war: The roles of Christian and Muslim Ethiopian Queens in the 16th century (Seminar)

Après la mort du roi chrétien Lebna Dengel en 1540 puis de l'imam Ahmed en 1543, la guerre entre les pouvoirs musulmans et chrétiens éthiopiens connait une trêve. Leurs veuves, les reines Sabla Wangel et Dalwambarah, négocient dans la décennie 1540 notamment quant aux conditions de libération de leurs fils respectifs. Dans cette session, cet aspect méconnu de l'histoire politique du XVIe sera exploré par deux historiennes spécialistes de la période.

After the death of the Christian King Lebna Dengel in 1540, and then of Imam Ahmed in 1543, the war between the Muslim and Christian Ethiopian powers have known a truce. In the 1540s, their widows, Queens Sabla Wangel and Dalwambarah, have negotiated regarding in particular the release conditions of their respective sons. In this session, this unknown aspect of the political history of the 16th c. will be explored by two specialists of the period.
