Le 7 mai 2015 sera inaugurée l’exposition (Re-)Découvrir Dire Dawa / (Re-)Discovering Dire Dawa à l’Alliance éthio-française de Dire Dawa. Le CFEE, les Alliances éthio-françaises de Dire Dawa et d’Addis-Abeba, l’Ambassade de France en Éthiopie, la Mairie et l’Administration régionale de Dire Dawa sont partenaires de cet évènement. L’inauguration sera suivie d’une table-ronde réunissant les représentants de la ville, et qui aura pour thème le patrimoine urbain de Dire Dawa et sa mise en valeur.

The exibition (Re-)Découvrir Dire Dawa / (Re-)Discovering Dire Dawawill be opened on May 7th 2015 at the Ethio-French Alliance of Dire Dawa. CFEE, Ethio-French Alliances of Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa, the Embassy of France to Ethiopia, the City and the Regional administration of Dire Dawa are partners in this event. The opening will be followed by a round-table gathering representatives from the city. The topic of discussion will be the urban heritage of Dire Dawa and its promotion.

L’exposition (Re-)Découvrir Dire Dawa / (Re-)Discovering Dire Dawa à est organisée autour des aquarelles de Nicolas Deleau qui ont servi d’illustrations au City Guide de Dire Dawa (CFEE-Shama Books, 2013). Ces œuvres mettent en lumière de façon inédite le patrimoine urbain de l’ancienne ville ferroviaire de l’Est éthiopien, fondée en 1902 dans la foulée de la Compagnie impériale des chemins de fer éthiopiens, créée en 1896. L’exposition est conçue par Thomas Osmond (chercheur associé au CFEE), l’auteur du City Guide, et Jonathan Le Péchon, qui en était le graphiste. Après l’Alliance éthio-française de Dire Dawa, l’exposition s’installera à l’Alliance éthio-française d’Addis-Abeba à partir du 15 juin 2015.

The exhibition (Re-)Découvrir Dire Dawa / (Re-)Discovering Dire Dawa is based on Nicolas Deleau’s watercolours, which have illustrated the Dire Dawa City Guide (CFEE-Shama Books, 2013). His work draws attention to the urban heritage of the old railway town of Eastern Ethiopia, founded in 1902 following the creation of the Compagnie impériale des chemins de fer éthiopiens in 1896. The exhibition has been conceived by Thomas Osmond (CFEE affiliate researcher), the author of the guide, and Jonathan Le Péchon, its graphic designer. After the Ethio-French Alliance of Dire Dawa, the exhibition will settle at the Ethio-French Alliance of Addis Ababa, starting from June 15th 2015.

L’inauguration de cette exposition à Dire Dawa sera également l’occasion d’une table-ronde dédiée au patrimoine urbain de la ville. Organisée par Thomas Osmond, elle rassemblera M. Adem Farah, maire-adjoint de Dire Dawa, de M. Mohammed Yusuf, député de Dire Dawa à la Chambre des représentants, de M. Fouad, directeur du bureau du tourisme, de M. Abdulaziz Ahmed, directeur du chemin de fer, et du Dr Mohammed Abderrhaman, médecin. Le sujet est d’importance dans une ville où la conservation et la mise en valeur du patrimoine se heurte à une volonté de développement urbain qui aboutit, bien souvent, à la destruction des quartiers anciens. Deux volontés publiques apparemment contradictoires, qu’il s’agit donc de faire dialoguer.

The opening of the exhibition in Dire Dawa will be followed by a round-table dedicated to the urban heritage of the city. Organised by Thomas Osmond, it will gather M. Adem Farah, vice-mayor of Dire Dawa, M. Mohammed Yusuf, deputy of Dire Dawa at the Federal Parliament, M. Fouad, director of the tourism bureau, M. Abdulaziz Ahmed, director of the railway, and Dr Mohammed Abderrhaman, medical dictor. The issue of heritage is an important one in this city, where conservation and promotion of heritage appears in conflict with a strong will of urban development that often led to the destruction of old neighborhoods. The round table aims to establish a dialogue between these two apparently contradictory public wills.
