Workshop organized by Ifpo-Erbil and the Urban Observatory, Ifpo-Beirut (Caecilia Pieri and Jessica Giraud) Shalabi House, Ifpo-Erbil Citadel of Erbil
The recent nomination of Erbil's Citadel as Unesco World Heritage sheds light on the vivid cultural activity about urban heritage in Iraqi Kurdistan. Ifpo-Erbil and the Urban Observatory of Ifpo-Beirut take this opportunity to emphasize various attempts at enhancing the cultural valorization of urban fabric in historical cities by organizing a workshop on this issue. Presentations will first concern Erbil citadel, which appears as the nodal focus of heritage in the city, but also the overall urban design in the lower neighbourhoods. Then we will speak about projects and realisations in Sulaimaniah, Kifri and Akre, where various configurations about urban heritage are integrated into the urban development.
By showing various and complementary case studies, this workshop would allow the participants to get a global perspective on current attempts at triggering the cultural valorization of urban centres in Iraqi Kurdistan.
