Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntabhūṣaṇa, also known as Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa, is an authentic text in Pāṇinian semantics. It is a commentary on the Vaiyākaraṇamatonmajjana compiled by the great grammarian Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita (17 th c.), and is written by Kauṇḍabhaṭṭa, the nephew of Bhaṭṭoji. The main intention is to refute the objections raised by Naiyāyikas and Mīmāṃsakas on various aspects of Pāṇinian semantics and to establish the grammarians’ views on the subject. Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntabhūṣaṇasāra, an abridged version of the Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa, also written by Kauṇḍabhaṭṭa, is the more famous text with more than ten commentaries written on it. But nobody has so far attempted to write a commentary on the Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa and though the text has been published four times from different places, none of them can be treated as a critical edition.

The Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa is being published here with the Nirañjanī commentary by Pandit Ramyatna Shukla, and critical notes (Prakāśa) by the editor. The edition itself is prepared taking a 17th c. manuscript as base, and comparing it with 40 other manuscripts from different parts of India, and with printed versions. The present volume contains the first part of the work and is devoted to the meaning of roots and verbal suffixes which is at its heart.

About the author

After retiring as Head of the Department of Vyākaraṇa of the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Prof. Ramyatna Shukla served as Visiting Professor at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha and as Shastra Chudamani Scholar of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan. He was also associated with the French Institute of Pondicherry as Honorary Professor. He is the recipient of many awards, prominent among which are the Certificate of Honour for Proficiency in Sanskrit conferred by the President of India and the Vachaspati Puraskar Award 2005 of the K. K. Birla Foundation for his work titled Vyākaraṇadarśane Śr̥ṣṭiprakriyāvimarśaḥ. He holds titles such as Mahāmahopādhyāya, Abhinava Pāṇini, and Sarasvatiputra.

Prof. K.V. Ramakrishnamacharyulu is a former Vice-Chancellor of Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Rajasthan Sanskrit University, Jaipur and retired Professor in Vyākaraṇa, Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati. He has studied in depth the Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇasāra and all its available commentaries, and is now engaged in writing a comprehensive commentary on this text. He has been honoured with titles such as Mahāmahopādhyāya (Honoris causa), Śāstravidvanmaṇi, Vyākaraṇa Śāstra Viśarada, and with various awards including the Ramakrishna Award from the Sarasvati Vikas, Canada. He is currently associated with the French Institute of Pondicherry as Honorary Professor.

Le Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntabhūṣaṇa, également connu sous le nom de Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa, est un texte authentique de la tradition sémantique pāṇinéenne. C'est un commentaire du Vaiyākaraṇamatonmajjana compilé par l'éminent grammairien Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita (17e s.) et écrit par son neveu, Kauṇḍabhaṭṭa. Son intention principale est de réfuter les objections soulevées par les Naiyāyika et les Mīmāṃsaka sur divers aspects de la sémantique pāṇinéenne et d'établir le point de vue des grammairiens sur le sujet. Mais jusqu'à présent, nul n'avait tenté d'écrire un commentaire sur le Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa et, bien que le texte ait été publié à quatre reprises en différents endroits, aucune de ces publications ne pouvait être considérée comme une édition critique.

Le Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa est publié ici avec le commentaire Nirañjanī du Pandit Ramyatna Shukla et des notes explicatives (Prakāśa) de l'éditeur scientifique. L'édition elle-même est préparée sur la base d'un manuscrit du 17e s., en le comparant avec 40 autres manuscrits provenant de différentes régions de l'Inde, ainsi qu'avec les versions imprimées. Le présent tome, contenant la première partie de l'œuvre, est consacré à la signification des racines et suffixes verbaux qui est au cœur du Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa.

Suite à sa retraite du poste de chef du Département de Vyākaraṇa de la Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, le PrRamyatna Shukla a été professeur invité au Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha et chercheur "Shastra Chudamani" au Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan. Il a également été associé à l'Institut Français de Pondichéry en tant que professeur honoraire. Il est le récipiendaire de nombreux prix, dont le Certificate of Honour for Proficiency in Sanskrit décerné par le Président de l’Inde et le Prix Vachaspati Puraskar 2005 de la Fondation K.K.
