Netsereab Andom, PhD candidate at the University of Khartoum and associated with CEDEJ Khartoum, recently presented a paper in « The Regional Workshop on International Migration from the Horn of Africa to Sudan and from there Onwards ».

Organized by the Centre for Refugees, Migration & Development Studies of the Faculty of Community Development of the University of Gadarif and funded by the German international development cooperation agency GIZ, this conference was held from November 27th to 30th, 2016 in the premises of the University of Gadarif.

Netsereab Andom’s presentation was entitled “Social Networks, Media and Eritrean Diaspora’s Role in the National Youth Out-Migration Challenges from Eritrea to Sudan”. In this presentation, Netsereab Andom discussed the oft-overlooked role of socio-cultural factors in border-crossing(s).

Netsereab Ghebremichael Andom is a PhD-Candidate at the Department of Sociology & Social Anthropology, University of Khartoum. He is also PhD student associate with CEDEJ Khartoum. As a former Eritrean refugee (1985-1991) in Eastern Sudan, his area of interest has remained on “migration and refugee studies.” Having completed his B.A degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Asmara in 2000, he did his BSc (Hon.) and M.Sc. in Sociology from the University of Natal (Republic of South Africa) in 2003 and end of 2004, respectively. His Master’s thesis was on “Socio-Economic Re-Integration of Refugee Returnees in Eritrea: the Case of PROFERI Project in Dige Sub-Zone.” Having served as a lecturer for eight years in various Eritrean institutes of higher learning, since 2014 he also frequently works as a part-time lecturer at the University of Medical Sciences and Technology (Khartoum), Faculty of Economic, Social and Environmental Studies.
