About the book

Speak, Memory. Oral Histories of Kodaikanal Dalits is the outcome of a research based on Dalit oral narratives, to record and to understand their interpretation of their own pasts. To reveal the richness and complexity of this through the words and rhythms of Cakkiliyar testimonies is the formative concern of this book. It seeks to understand, historically, the phenomenon of untouchability as it was experienced, internalised and articulated by Dalits. By shedding light on ceri life in the past and opening a window on to the present, this study attempts to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of social change amongst Dalits at the village level. Hence, it aims to provide a biography of these localities. Testimonies and the memories they involve enable us to delve into the perceptions of the past and the different ways of speaking about it, within the same community.

About the author

Alexandra de Heering is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Namur (Belgium) and at the French Institute of Pondicherry (India). She is interested in Dalit histories, particularly in exploring them through the prism of their oral narratives. Her other interests include a social history of portrait photography in South India.

Speak, Memory. Oral Histories of Kodaikanal Dalits est le fruit d’une recherche fondée sur des témoignages oraux de Dalits autrefois appelés intouchables. Son ambtion est d’enregistrer une trace de leur histoire et d’accéder à leur propre interprétation du passé. A travers les mots et les rythmes des témoignages de Cakkiliyars, ce livre s’applique à en saisir la richesse, la complexité. Cet ouvrage vise à donc à appréhender, dans une perspective historique, le phénomène de l’intouchabilité tel qu’il se vit, s’internalise et s’articule à l’échelle villageoise. Fenêtre ouverte sur le présent mais aussi tableau dépeignant la vie au ceri dans le passé, l’ouvrage permet de comprendre quelques ressorts fondamentaux des dynamiques du changement social chez les Dalits. Variés, ces témoignages nous plongent dans la diversité des perceptions du passé et des manières d'en rendre compte au sein d'une même communauté.

À propos de l'auteur

Alexandra de Heering est chercheuse postdoctorante à l’Université de Namur (Belgique) et à l’Institut français de Pondichéry (Inde). Elle s’intéresse aux histoires dalit, et plus spécifiquement à leur exploration à travers le prisme de l’histoire orale. Elle a également élargi son champ de recherche à l’histoire sociale de la photographie de portrait en Inde du Sud.
