All of the artifact bearing clastic sediments encountered during the entire survey can tentatively be correlated with the Gademotta Formation defined in the Lake Zuai area. Thus no archaeological remains older than the Middle Stone Age were discovered. Two areas, the Sagan River delta and the Dima River valley, appeared promising archaeologically, but could not be reached by vehicle for closer inspection. The most promising area lies along the Billate River north of Lake Abaya. This river, although approached from the east and west, was only reached from Awasa on the eastern side of the Rift. In this area, deep ravines and arroyos show extensive and thick mantles of clastic, supposedly colluvial sediments and palaeosols containing Middle Stone Age materials throughout, but mostly associated with fossil soils. The Late Stone Age remains occur in the upper parts and on the surfaces. Judging from the observations made west of the Billate River, it is very likely that a similar sequence of sediments and cultural materials exists along the western side of the river. This area should yield a cultural sequence similar to the Lake Zuai area for both the Middle and Late Stone Age. It is unfortunate that no faunal remains were recovered, but this is most likely due to the chemical characteristics of the paleosols as suggested by the lack of organic remains in the occupation horizons within the Gademotta Formation of the Lake Zuai area.
