Ester Serra Mingot, PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in Maastricht University is currently doing her PhD on « Transnational Social Protection. How Sudanese migrants in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom and their families in Sudan make use of social protection, locally and transnationally ».

In Sudan, CEDEJ Khartoum will support her fieldwork.

Here is a brief extract of Ester Serra Mingot’s research plan:

« This study, thus, investigates how Sudanese migrants in the Netherlands and the UK, and their families, in Sudan, make use of different forms of social protection, locally and across borders. I will do this by answering the main research question:
“How do Sudanese migrants in the Netherlands and the UK and their families in Sudan make use of different forms of social protection, locally and across borders?”

In order to answer this question, four sub-questions have been identified:

• What forms of social protection do Sudanese transnational families use, in order to receive and provide protection?
• Are different forms of social protection used to address different needs, and if so how?
• What factors of receiving country contexts influence the forms of social protection used?
• How do the different forms of social protection affect the relationships between the migrants and their families ‘back home’? »
