The Afar region during the First Half of the Twentieth century ; During the first half of the 20th century, the sultan of Awsa has been dealing with all the enemies of the Ethiopian empire (Lidj Yasu, the destitute emperor, the Italians in the late 30s, than the British). By this way, Afar tried to preserve their autonomy or to obtain a complete separation. After the coup which overthrown Sultan Mohamed Yayo in 1944, Haile Selassie progressively took control of the Afar. In the same time Afar faced urbanization along the main roads and the contraband which replaced caravan trade took advantage of the exchange differential and the scarcity of Maria-Theresa thalers. In the late 40s, an administrative reform has divided afar territory within the neighboring Ethiopian provinces.
